CHC has been a part of the Canberra community since 1998. Our vision is to be the leading not-for-profit provider of quality affordable housing in the ACT. Our mission is to provide affordable housing to people on low to moderate incomes as well as offer homes for every age and every stage of life.
At CHC, we are committed to fostering social cohesion, and we take the same approach to our working environment. We maintain a workplace that promotes safe work practices, tolerance and teamwork. Our staff are empowered to share ideas about their work and the organisation as a whole. Participating in community activities such as Homelessness Week, Christmas appeals and other charity events unites the CHC team.
CHC supports, encourages and fosters our tenant community. We provide access to programs which allow our tenants to pursue schooling and further study through the annual Ken Horsham Education Scholarship.
Children within our tenancy families can apply to be a part of the AIS School Holiday Program, a great way to have some fun and meet new friends.
As part of our community engagement program, CHC also holds various events during the year like boat cruises, trips to the zoo, tenant forums and helpful workshops.find out more
CHC continuously explores innovative housing strategies with an aim to be a benchmark for quality. We take a socially responsible approach to development and lead the way in product design that considers usability, livability and sustainability, with an overall vision of enriching communities.
An example is CHC’s new homes at Moncrieff offered under the ACT Government’s Land Rent Scheme. Recognising that the initial costs associated with home purchase are the greatest barriers to entry, CHC has retained all land rent costs until settlement, enabling our purchasers to retain a tenancy while waiting for their new home to be built.
Offering our land rent properties in this way has been very well received and has meant that eight of our tenancy families have taken up the opportunity to purchase their very own home at Moncrieff.Register now for future releases
CHC has worked closely with the Downer community since 2011 to develop a design for the redevelopment of the former Downer Primary School site.
The project proposal will deliver strong outcomes for CHC, Downer residents and the wider Canberra community. Located on Bradfield, Melba and Frencham streets, this long-awaited vision will deliver a new and vibrant precinct to North Canberra while preserving and honouring an important part of the suburb’s history.
CHC recently partnered with the Downer Community Association (DCA) to celebrate the rejuvenation of the village centre with Party At The Shops. The long-term relationship that exists between CHC and the Downer community has allowed us to better understand the products we are creating and delivering, enriches our relationship and provides a valuable platform for ongoing communication and collaboration.find out more

Part of CHC’s development includes the addition of 29 two-bedroom homes, which is home to many of our tenant families. Completed in 2011, Gungaderra Estate neighbours the Symphony Park master planned community also developed by CHC.
CHC’s redevelopment of the original Gungaderra Estate includes the restoration of the heritage-listed Gungaderra Homestead. Featuring a large hall, meeting rooms, fully-functioning kitchen disabled bathrooms and storage, the Homestead is available to hire for functions, events or ongoing community activities.FIND OUT MORE
