Saturday 14 October shaped up to be a perfect day to celebrate the rejuvenation of the Downer Shops, with a ‘Party at the Shops’, run by the Downer Community Association.
The sun was out and the feet tapping sound of The Gypsyjazz Project was flowing through the air… as was the delicious aroma of a sausage sandwich.
Downer’s ‘Party at the Shops’ was a huge success, and we were extremely happy to be a part of such a fun, community day.
It was the second party that Downer has held at their shops, the first one being last year, however, this year’s event had a special purpose – introducing the new businesses of the local shops to residents. The Downer shops is now home to a café (the popular Gang Gang Café), a yoga studio, a vet, See Change, and still has plenty more to come.
The event catered to kids, families and anyone else looking for a nice day out. For the kids, there was a jumping castle, face painting, glitter tattoos and an opportunity to become entrepreneurs, and for the adults, there were food stalls, a sausage sizzle, a suitcase rummage and various arts and plants stalls.
The Downer Community Association called out to locals to get involved, and can credit the day’s success to these people.
“Thank you to CHC and everyone involved for the work put in to planning the event. It was an excellent day, and all the stall holders and visitors were very happy with everything,” Denis from Downer Community Association says.
“We very much appreciate the support provided by CHC, which made a substantial contribution to the day.”
The local preschool were the force behind the cake stall and sausage sizzle, and were hugely popular, having to restock on sausages three times throughout the day.
The local café was also wildly successful, with their coffee’s in high demand.
At CHC, we also had the opportunity to show off our plans for Downer. We received a lot of interest on the day and were pleased to hear the community’s thoughts.
By the end of the day, 500 people had popped by the ‘Party at the Shops’ to celebrate the beggining of a new era for the Downer Shops!
